Starting small businesses

It is almost impossible for the poor to start a small business by themselves because of illiteracy, lack of knowledge and lack of capital etc. Aqueduct is starting to address these problems by providing training in reading and writing, developing business training and by establishing revolving loans.

A group of those interested in setting up a business get together to start saving a small deposit, which is then supplemented by a loan from Aqueduct. This is returned on a regular basis depending on the business and the returned loan is then loaned to another in the group. The groups continue to meet to encourage each other and to pass on what they have learnt.

The businesses that we are looking at include buffalo fattening, the keeping of goats (very popular meat in Pakistan) and the keeping of chickens for eggs. Water buffalo are an important source of milk and excellent beef when slaughtered.
